With our boat safely tied up in Funchal Madeira for a few hours, Dawn and I strolled between the flower market and old-town district. A charming side-street drew us to a brand-new micro-enterprise and very soon we were chatting to local artist-designer, Jorge Rosa.
Jorge was delighted to talk to my camera about his business philosophy and his plans for the future. I quickly realised that our meanderings had brought us to a sensitive craftsman-artist -and a remarkable and thoughtful young man. When I asked how he was reacting to the catastrophic events that were unfolding that week in far-away Japan, Jorge offered some words of hope to the people and country with which he had happy familiarity and which had been the source of much of his own artistic inspiration...
Best wishes for your future sucess Jorge. Your skill and sincerity will surely be rewarded soon.
We will call again when next we stop-over at your beautiful island.
This short sequence was shot on my trusty, palm-sized Sanyo Xacti minicam. This camera has been my close travel companion for some 4 years. It comes into its own in impromptu, closeup, "run-and-gun" interviews such as this when there is no time for rehearsal -or even basic setup. Its ideal for the sort of one-shot, seat-of-the-pants filming that, according to some, is my trademark. I love it.
The same evening -whilst attempting to shoot a glorious shipboard sunset- I got carried away with the moment -and let the lens rest just a tad too long on the dipping but still fierce globe on the horizon. My reward was a mediocre twilight shot -and a burnt out camera sensor...ah well!
Any suggestions for a modern (SD card) minicam replacement?
