Whenever we need to convey critical messages involving letters of the alphabet, it is essential that we get it right first time. Passport info, finance, medical, travel details and document references, demand absolute accuracy. In emergency situations, wrongly-heard words can cause delay and confusion –with potentially, tragic consequences.
The solution -in the form of using a set of dedicated words to define and enunciate each alphabet letter -has been around since mid 20th century. Its now standardised and understood around the world and endorsed by maritime and aviation agencies -as well as police, military and emergency services.
Maybe, in a world where matters of security or personal survival are likely to rely on the spoken word, familiarity with and ability to use this simple convention, could save lives. Lets make it a no-cost part of every young person's social tool-kit.
Here's my own mnemonic. It might help introduce our youngsters to, what I call, the “I-SPELL” code. Try it out on the occasion of your next family motoring trip as a fun way for all the family to acquire this simple skill. Just take it in turns to spell out the registration plate of the car in front using this code!
